You may not need to replace the whole fence. A noncombustible gate or panel where the fence meets your house breaks the fuse. It is the detail inspectors will look at first.

Do I have to tear out my wood fence right now?
No. The immediate rule covers only new fences. Existing fences fall under Phase 2, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, La Canada Flintridge's fire authority, sets that deadline, up to 5 years after the state adopts final regulations.
Can I keep most of the fence and replace just the last section?
Usually, yes. The regulation targets the 5 feet nearest the structure. On La Canada Flintridge's larger foothill lots, swapping in a metal gate or noncombustible panel at the connection point is often the most cost-effective path to compliance.
Does vinyl fencing comply?
No. Standard vinyl is combustible and deforms under radiant heat. Metal, masonry, or verified fire-rated products are the compliant options.
My property backs onto the Angeles National Forest. Does that change the fence rules?
The Zone 0 rule itself is the same 0-5 ft standard everywhere it applies. But forest-adjacent parcels along the city's northern edge sit in the highest mapped hazard severity, so those properties should expect the earliest inspection attention and have the most to gain from replacing the fence-to-structure connection early.
